The church of Ephesus during the time of the apostle Paul was comprised of both rich and poor, Jews and Gentiles, men and women, masters and slaves. Paul told them to endeavor “to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Unity already exists because believers share one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. How do we “keep the unity”? By expressing our different opinions and convictions with lowliness, gentleness, and patience. The Spirit will give us the power to react in love toward those with whom we disagree.
바울사도 시대의 에베소교회는 부자와 가난한 사람, 유대인과 이방인, 남자와 여자, 그리고 주인과 노예들로 구성되어 있었습니다. 바울사도는 그들에게 “화합을 만들어 내거나 체계화하는데 열심을 내라”고 하지 않고, “평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라”고 말했습니다. 믿는 사람들은 한 몸, 한 성령, 한 소망, 한 주님, 한 믿음, 한 세례, 그리고 무엇보다도 한 하나님과 한 아버지를 공유하고 있기 때문에 화합은 이미 우리 중에 존재하고 있습니다. 우리는 어떻게 “화합을 유지”할 수 있을까요? 우리의 다른 의견과 신념들을 겸손함과 온유함, 그리고 인내함으로 표현함으로써 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 성령님이 우리와 의견이 다른 사람들을 사랑으로 대할 수 있는 능력을 주실 것입니다.
